1991 AL Game Stories: Opening Day

April 8, 1991

It was opening day for the 1991 AL MLB season. In the games scheduled for today the home teams prevailed. In Toronto, fans saw a well pitched game that ended in a 1-0 victory for the Blue Jays. Toronto pitchers combined to throw a 2 hit shutout against the visiting Boston Red Sox. In Baltimore, the Orioles won a 3-2 game that went 10 innings. The Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-4 and in Texas, the Rangers won a 7-6 game over the Milwaukee Brewers by getting the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the 9th.

Dave Stieb had an impressive outing at The Skydome where the Toronto Blue Jays
beat the Boston Red Sox 1 to 0.
 
Stieb(1-0) was very good in the win.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing
just 1 hit and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings.  Boston made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
Stieb got help from Tom Henke who was credited with his 1st save.  Roger
Clemens(0-1) was the losing pitcher.  'Just one or two mistakes were all it
took to beat us today' Joe Morgan said.  'We take these games one day at a
time, but this one was hard to take.'
 
CHICAGO AT BALTIMORE

One run was the difference at Memorial Stadium as the Baltimore Orioles
defeated the Chicago White Sox in 10 innings 3 to 2.
 
Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings.  Baltimore ended up
winning it in the 10th inning.  After two outs Cal Ripken doubled.  Glenn
Davis came to the plate and doubled making Baltimore victorious to the
delight of the the home town crowd.  The game was a scoreless duel until the
6th inning.  
 
The victory was credited to Mark Williamson(1-0) who went 1 inning, allowing
no runs. The loss was charged to Jack McDowell(0-1).  He pitched 9 and 2/3
innings allowing 6 hits and 5 walks.

The Kansas City Royals offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 3rd
inning and toppled the Cleveland Indians by a 8 to 4 score at Royals
Stadium.
 
Kansas City tallied 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when they came up
with 5 base hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.  Both teams
finished the game with 12 hits.  
 
Bret Saberhagen(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and
allowing 4 runs. Jeff Montgomery got the save, his 1st.  Greg Swindell(0-1)
was the loser.  He was not very effective, surrendering 5 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings.  
 
 
MILWAUKEE AT TEXAS

Jack Daugherty had 2 base hits and 2 RBI at Arlington Stadium as the Texas
Rangers won a thriller over the Milwaukee Brewers in, 7 to 6.
 
The deciding run was scored by Texas in the 9th.  Ruben Sierra drew a walk.
Kevin Reimer was next and he lined a base-hit.  Julio Machado then threw a
pitch that the catcher muffed making Texas the victor and beginning a joyous
home town celebration.  Texas rapped out 11 hits for the night.  
 
Rich Gossage(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Machado(0-1) took the loss in relief.  It was a tough loss for him
as he did not allow an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
