1991 NL Championship Series Game 4

 The Atlanta Braves finally got on the scoreboard after 28 scoreless innings by getting 2 runs in the 3rd inning of tonight's game. But Pittsburgh prevailed in the end and defeated the Braves 5-3 to complete the sweep of the 1991 National League Championship Series. Atlanta's bats finally came alive in this game and the score was tied 3-3 in the 8th inning before Barry Bonds hit a solo homerun to give the Pirates a 4-3 lead. Gary Redus added a solo shot in the 9th and Stan Belinda closed out the game, and the Series, for Pittsburgh.

The deciding run was scored by Pittsburgh in the top of the 8th.  Bonds
blasted a solo shot.  Pittsburgh rapped out 9 hits for the night.  
 
Bob Patterson(1-0) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Patterson
got help from Stan Belinda who earned his 2nd save.  Mike Stanton(0-1) was
given the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 1/3
innings.

1991 NL Championship Series Game 3

  The Pittsburgh Pirates pitching staff continued their dominance over the Atlanta Braves winning Game 3 of the 1991 NL Championship Series 1-0. It was the 2nd shutout in a row for the Pirates and Atlanta only scored 1 run in Game 1. Bobby Bonilla drove in the games' only run in the 1st inning off Atlanta starter Steve Avery. Avery was a hard luck loser, allowing only the 1 run and striking out 11 in 8 innings of work. John Smiley got the start for Pittsburgh and went 7 scoreless innings for the Win. The Pirate bullpen did the rest with Stan Belinda getting the Save. Pittsburgh is up 3 games to none in the best of 7 Series.

John Smiley(1-0) had a solid outing for Pittsburgh.  He went 7 innings
surrendering 4 hits and 2 walks.  The Atlanta batters didn't put up a fight
in the bottom of the 9th.  
 
Stan Belinda preserved the game for Smiley, recording his his 1st save.  Steve
Avery(0-1) was charged with the loss.  Although losing the contest, he
whiffed 11 batters in 8 innings.

1991 NL Championship Series Game 2

 Doug Drabek and the Pirate bullpen combined to shutout the Atlanta Braves 4-0 tonight in Pittsburgh. The Pirates scored isolated runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 8th innings while out hitting Atlanta 11-7. Drabek (pictured) went 7 2/3 innings for the Win. Tom Glavine took the loss. The Series will now shift to Atlanta with Pittsburgh holding a 2-0 edge.

Mike Lavalliere had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated
the Atlanta Braves by a score of 4 to 0 at Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Pittsburgh went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning plating one
baserunner on 3 hits.  That was all the offense they were to need.
Pittsburgh ended up with 11 hits for the game while Atlanta had 7.  
 
Doug Drabek(1-0) allowed no runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Tom Glavine(0-1) was the loser.  He surrendered 8 hits and no walks
in 6 innings.

1991 NL Championship Series Game 1

 The 1991 NL Championship Series opened up in Pittsburgh today between the Pirates and the Atlanta Braves. The best of 7 Series starts in Pittsburgh because of the Pirates better regular season record. But Atlanta had a better record going head-to-head against Pittsburgh. The Braves were 9-3 this year against the Pirates. Atlanta was the only team Pittsburgh had a losing record against this season.
  In today's game Pittsburgh starter Zane Smith went 7 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits. Led by Jay Bell's 3 hits the Pirates banged out 11 hits in their 4-1 victory over Atlanta.

At Three Rivers Stadium the Pittsburgh Pirates outscored the Atlanta Braves 4
to 1.
