1991 AL Championship Series Game 4

October 12, 1991

Wasn't expecting my Tigers to be eliminated so quickly, but the Chicago White Sox completed their sweep by defeating Detroit 7-6 in 10 innings tonight. The Tigers scored quickly and Chicago starter Alex Fernandez didn't survive the 1st inning. Then it was the White Sox turn, and they chased Tiger starter Walt Terrell with 4 runs in the 3rd for a 5-2 lead. Detroit outfielder Pete Incaviglia hit 2 2-run homers to keep his team in the game, 1 in the 4th inning and 1 in the 8th inning that tied the score at 6. Tiger closer Mike Henneman made his first appearance of the Series in the 8th inning and ended up the loser of the game when he allowed the White Sox a run in the 10th. Bobby Thigpen entered the game in the 9th and pitched 2 scoreless innings to get the Win for Chicago.

See the source imageOctober 11, 1991

The AL Championship Series moved to Detroit for the next 3 games but the results weren't any  better for the Tigers. Up 2 games to none, the Chicago White Sox won Game 3 tonight by the score of 5-3. Detroit got on the scoreboard 1st by plating 3 runs in the 4th inning. But the White Sox came back in the 5th inning and put 5 runs on the board on 6 hits and a costly 2 base error by centerfielder Milt Cuyler. Melido Perez (pictured) came on in relief for Charlie Hough in the 4th inning and shut the door on Detroit over the next 3 2/3 innings. Perez got the Win and Scott Radinsky pitched 2 perfect innings for the Save. Chicago now has a commanding 3-0 lead in this best of 7 Series.

In a two run game the Chicago White Sox got by the Detroit Tigers by the score
of 5 to 3.

Chicago did all the necessary damage in the 5th inning when they came up with
5 runs on 6 hits. The key at-bat was by Frank Thomas who deflated the mood
of the partisan fans when he slapped a single bringing home two baserunners.
Detroit went down without a fight in the bottom of the 9th.

Melido Perez(1-0) went 3 and 2/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Scott
Radinsky was credited with his 1st save. Bill Gullickson(0-1) was the losing
pitcher. He allowed Chicago 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings of work.

1991 AL Championship Series Game 1

Jack McDowell says “everyone knows” there are Hall of Famers who ...October 8, 1991

The AL Championship Series got underway tonight at Comiskey Park in Chicago featuring a matchup between the White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Detroit had a 'play-in game' yesterday against Toronto that Bill Gullickson started. Frank Tanana started the day before that and Walt Terrell pitched in relief the day before Tanana. So the Tigers were forced to begin this Series with their #4 starter Mark Leiter. Leiter did well before leaving the game with the bases loaded in the 5th inning. Detroit got out of that inning allowing only 1 run.
But the story of this game was the pitching of Chicago starter Jack McDowell. McDowell went the distance, allowing 1 run and striking out 12 as the White Sox defeated the Tigers 3-1. The big hit for Chicago came from Sammy Sosa who hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th.
