1991 AL Regular Season Playoff Game: Tor. @ Det.

October 7, 1991

In the most dramatic finish to a game I've had in a very long time, my Detroit Tigers won their regular season playoff game against the Toronto Blue Jays with a Cecil Fielder walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Tigers had built a 5-2 lead heading into the 8th inning, but Candy Maldanado hit a 3-run homer off Mike Hennemann to cap off a 4 run inning. Then the bottom of the 9th game up with Detroit still trailing 6-5.
Tony Phillips started the inning by popping out. Lou Whitaker walked, for the 4th time in the game. Alan Trammel hit into a force-out, leaving the Tigers with a runner on 1st and 2 out. Cecil Fielder came to the plate with the crowd on their feet and I rolled a 1-9, a ballpark homerun chance of 1-15 and flyout 16-20. I rolled a 15! Fielder's hit barely cleared the fence for a game winning, walkoff 2-run homer. The fans went wild (and so did I) as Detroit won the AL East Pennant!

It was a great finish at Tiger Stadium as the impressive Detroit Tigers pulled
off a dramatic comeback beating the Toronto Blue Jays by the count of 7 to
6.

Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the 9th inning plating 2
runs. After an out was recorded, Lou Whitaker started the attack as he drew
a walk. One out later, Cecil Fielder came to bat and popped a two-run clout
over the fence resulting in a mighty exciting win for Detroit and the 45,487
home town fans in attendance. Detroit managed 7 hits in their victory.

Mike Henneman(10-7) got the win allowing 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings. Jim
Acker(4-6) was charged with the loss in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in
perseverance for you,' Fielder noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a
while, but we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And
it was great to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'

TEAM RISP- Blue Jays: 3 for 9 Tigers: 3 for 9

With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
very potent Detroit Tigers rallied to top Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 7
to 6.

Detroit scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2 runs. After an out
was recorded, Lou Whitaker keyed the rally when he drew a walk. After
another out, Cecil Fielder came up and he cleared the fences for a two-run
home run giving Detroit the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy.
Detroit banged out 7 hits on the night.

Mike Henneman(10-7) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and
allowing 1 run. Jim Acker(4-6) took the loss in relief.

Henneman and Fielder were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the
great come from behind victory. As Sparky Anderson noted, 'A win like this
one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the
fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen
runs!'

WEB GEMS- Bot 2nd: Mark Leiter robbed Leo Gomez of a base hit.

Pete Incaviglia knocked 3 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Memorial Stadium where the
Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 10 to 2.

Incaviglia was unconscious all day. The Baltimore fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering big hits! He bombed
a two-run dinger in the 2nd inning, ripped a solo home run in the 5th inning
and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 7th inning. Detroit had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The victory went to Mark Leiter(10-5) who went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs. The
loss was charged to Dave Johnson(3-8). 'It's just about getting in a good
hitting position and just going out there and being prepared,' Incaviglia
said. 'You try to hit in your own capacity and not do too much. I just try to
have a good approach, day after day, game by game, and pitch by pitch.'
