Albert Belle ripped 3 homeruns and had 8 RBI while Doug Jones went the distance
as the Cleveland Indians destroyed the Detroit Tigers by a score of 17 to 3 at
Municipal Stadium.

Belle was really 'in the zone'. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the
3rd inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and lofted a
three-run bomb in the 4th inning. Cleveland lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd
inning which saw them plate 9 runs on 7 hits and the 4th inning tallying 5
runs. Cleveland totaled 17 hits on the night.

Jones(1-7) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Walt Terrell(9-8)
was the loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 2
innings.

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Belle said. 'I'm
glad I decided to play!'

1991 AL Game: Bsn. @ Det.

September 11,1991

Cecil Fielder hit his 50th homerun of the season tonight but the Boston Red Sox won the ballgame 7-3. Fielder hit the homerun, a 2-run shot, in the 1st inning but that was about all the offense the Tigers could muster. The Red Sox's offense was led by Phil Plantier who hit 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI. Matt Young pitched well after the 1st inning and got the Win for Boston.  With the loss, the Toronto Blue Jays pulled within 4 games of 1st place Detroit.

Phil Plantier blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Matt Young retired 10
batters on strikeouts as the Boston Red Sox bested the Detroit Tigers 7 to 3
at Tiger Stadium.

Plantier provided the offensive punch. He laced a base-hit in the 1st inning,
cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and clubbed a two-run home run in
the 7th inning. Boston managed 8 hits in their victory.

The victory went to Young(7-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Walt Terrell(9-7) was the loser. He gave up 7 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

Young didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had
10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent
total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good,
isn't it?'

Dave Winfield collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat at Anaheim Stadium as
the California Angels, running on all cylinders, ripped the slumping New York
Yankees by a large 13 to 3 margin.

Winfield enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He electrified the crowd with a
Grand Slam home run in the 3rd inning, hit a single in the 6th inning and
banged out a one-base hit in the 7th inning. California banged out 13 hits

runs. Andy Hawkins(1-2) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 5
hits and 3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Finley - except New York. Stump
Merrill lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off

game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

1991 AL Game of Note: NY @ Sea.

May 5, 1991

A baseball rarity occurred in today's game in Seattle where the Mariners defeated the New York Yankees 6-5. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. hit back to back homeruns for Seattle off  Yankee's starter Tim Leary. It is baseball's first father/son duo to hit back to back HR in the same game. For Jr., it was his 4th HR of the year. For Sr., it was his 1st.

One run was the difference at The Kingdome as the Seattle Mariners defeated
the New York Yankees 6 to 5.

Bill Krueger(2-0) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He
went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 walks seeing his ERA drop from
4.97 to 4.60. New York threatened in the 9th but Seattle was able to put
down the rally.

Krueger got help from Bill Swift who earned his 2nd save. The losing pitcher
was Tim Leary(0-4). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 4 walks in 5
and 2/3 innings.

Stump Merrill was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

1991 AL Player of Note: Det. Tony Phillips

April 21, 1991

Former Detroit Tigers 2B Tony Phillips dead at 56Versatile utility man Tony Phillips of the Detroit Tigers has homered in each of the team's last 3 games. What makes it unusual is the fact that all 3 homeruns were lead off homers. Phillips was the DH against the Chicago White Sox on 4/18 when he hit his 1st HR of the year leading off the game. He played 2nd base the next day and led off with a HR in that game. The next day, Phillips was playing ss, giving Allen Trammell a rest, and hit his 3rd straight leadoff HR. After a bit of a slow start, Tony has started making good contact with the ball and is being rewarded with hits.
