1991 NL Game Stories: Opening Day

April 8, 1991

The 1991 MLB season got underway today in the NL. The Cincinnati Reds had the traditional Opening Day game 1st up on the docket and didn't disappoint their fans, winning 8-5 over the Houston Astros. In the other 2 NL games scheduled today, the hometown teams weren't able to send their fans home happy. The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped an 8-2 decision to the visiting Montreal Expos and the New York Mets lost their opener 7-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

In an entertaining game at Riverfront Stadium the final score was the
Cincinnati Reds 8, the Houston Astros 5.
 
Cincinnati took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 3 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Eric Davis who made the
Cincinnati fans a happy lot when he cracked a two-run shot.  Houston had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
The win went to Tom Browning(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Al
Osuna(0-1) was given the loss in relief.  He was touched for 5 hits and 4
walks in 2 innings.  
 
 
MONTREAL AT PITTSBURGH

The Montreal Expos had very little trouble at Three Rivers Stadium downing the
Pittsburgh Pirates.  The score was 8 to 2.
 
Montreal scored 5 runs in the decisive top of the 4th inning when they had 5
base hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Spike Owen who deflated the
crowd as he doubled bringing home two baserunners.  Pittsburgh was out-hit by
Montreal, 15 hits to 6.  
 
The victory went to Dennis Martinez(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing
2 runs. Doug Drabek(0-1) suffered the loss.  Montreal scored big getting 6
runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT NEW YORK

Dale Murphy hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the New York Mets by the score of 7 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
 
Philadelphia scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
hits.  Darren Daulton kicked off the action when he stroked a single.  Dave
Hollins next to the plate and he was hit by a pitch.  Murphy then doubled.  A
balk was called.  John Kruk came up to bat and ripped a one-base hit.  After
another out, Dickie Thon came to bat and grounded into a double play.
Philadelphia had 11 hits for the afternoon while New York had 8.  
 
Mitch Williams(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Jeff Innis(0-1)
was the losing pitcher in relief.  He allowed 3 runs and 3 hits in 1 inning.
