1991 NL Game Stories

October 2, 1991

  The slate of games played today in the NL featured some fine pitching performances. 4 of the 6 games were shutouts and 1 game was a 2-1 pitching duel.

ATLANTA AT CINCINNATI

Tom Glavine was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 1 hit and
David Justice went deep and had 4 RBI as the spectacular Atlanta Braves
defeated the Cincinnati Reds by the score of 8 to 0 at Riverfront
Stadium.
 
Justice provided the offensive punch.  He stroked a base-hit plating two runs
in the 6th inning and popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 9th
inning.  Atlanta managed 12 hits in their victory.  
 
It was the 3rd shutout of the year for Glavine(14-11). Scott Scudder(4-7) was
given the loss.  Bobby Cox was very impressed with his pitcher, Glavine, 'He
had unusually good pitch placement tonight.  It was almost unfair - but a
beautiful game to watch from where I sat'
 
CHICAGO AT PHILADELPHIA

Jose De Jesus(11-9) and Greg Maddux(18-10) dueled it out with De Jesus and the
Philadelphia Phillies coming out on top of the Chicago Cubs by the score of 1
to 0.
 
De Jesus put on a good performance.  He gave up just 2 hits and 5 walks in 7
and 2/3 innings.  For the game Philadelphia out-hit Chicago 7 to 2.  
 
De Jesus got help from Mitch Williams who was credited with his 34th save.
 
HOUSTON AT SAN FRANCISCO

Ryan Bowen blanked San Francisco allowing just 3 hits at Candlestick Park as
the Houston Astros beat the San Francisco Giants by the count of 3 to
0.
 
Bowen(3-7) came through with a virtuoso performance against the San Francisco
hitters.  He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks in 9
innings reducing his ERA from 4.21 to 3.70.  San Francisco was retired
without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th.  
 
Paul McClellan(2-4) was tagged with the loss.  He was a hard-luck loser as he
did not allow an earned run in his 7 innings of work.  
 
Bowen was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of the
game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked.  My arm felt
great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings.  I only hope
that I can do it again next time out!'
 
MONTREAL AT ST. LOUIS

In a close game it was the St. Louis Cardinals 6, the Montreal Expos 4 at
Busch Stadium.
 
Rheal Cormier(5-1) pitched a solid game.  He went 6 innings surrendering 7
hits and 1 walk.  St. Louis had 8 hits for the afternoon.  
 
Lee Smith earned the save, his 39th.  Mark Gardner(7-8) was hit with the loss.
He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 5 hits and 3 walks in 2 and
2/3 innings.  
 
 
NEW YORK AT PITTSBURGH

In a game for the baseball purist, Randy Tomlin(10-3) and Pete Schourek(8-8)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Pittsburgh Pirates finally emerged
victorious over New York Mets, 2 to 1.
 
Pittsburgh had 2 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 4th inning.  New
York tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.  
 
Stan Belinda was credited with his 26th save.
 
SAN DIEGO AT LOS ANGELES

Win:Belcher(13-13) Loss:Harris(7-6)
Homeruns- E.Murray(18th)
 
Tim Belcher whitewashed San Diego as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San
Diego Padres 7 to 0 at Dodger Stadium.
 
Belcher(13-13) was very good in the win.  He didn't allow much, just 6 hits
and 4 walks in 9 innings.  Los Angeles had a total of 11 hits for the game.
 
Greg W Harris(7-6) was charged with the loss.  Despite losing, he struckout 10
Los Angeles batters in 6 innings.

1991 NL Standings and Game Story

October 1, 1991

 The Atlanta Braves won their 100th game of the season tonight by defeating the Cincinnati Reds 6-2. Atlanta is the 2nd team (Pittsburgh) to hit the 100 Win milestone this season in MLB. It was a come from behind victory for the Braves as they scored 5 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead and held on for the win.

In a dramatic ending the indomitable Atlanta Braves staged a comeback and held
on to win over the Cincinnati Reds by the count of 6 to 2.
 
Atlanta won the game with a rally in the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 3
hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Deion Sanders who silenced the
crowd when he launched a Grand Slam homerun.  Both teams totaled 8 hits on
the night.  
 
Mike Bielecki(12-10) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Randy
Myers(7-5) was hit with the loss in relief.  Bobby Cox was very happy after
the game, 'It's great to come back and win it in your last at bats! Our guys
just wouldn't give up.  And did you see the fans - one minute they're
laughing and screaming down all sorts of unprintable stuff at our guys - the
next minute - SILENCE! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win tonight!'

1991 NL Game Stories: Opening Day

April 8, 1991

The 1991 MLB season got underway today in the NL. The Cincinnati Reds had the traditional Opening Day game 1st up on the docket and didn't disappoint their fans, winning 8-5 over the Houston Astros. In the other 2 NL games scheduled today, the hometown teams weren't able to send their fans home happy. The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped an 8-2 decision to the visiting Montreal Expos and the New York Mets lost their opener 7-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies.

In an entertaining game at Riverfront Stadium the final score was the
Cincinnati Reds 8, the Houston Astros 5.
 
Cincinnati took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they tallied 2 runs
on 3 hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Eric Davis who made the
Cincinnati fans a happy lot when he cracked a two-run shot.  Houston had a
chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.  
 
The win went to Tom Browning(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Al
Osuna(0-1) was given the loss in relief.  He was touched for 5 hits and 4
walks in 2 innings.  
 
 
MONTREAL AT PITTSBURGH

The Montreal Expos had very little trouble at Three Rivers Stadium downing the
Pittsburgh Pirates.  The score was 8 to 2.
 
Montreal scored 5 runs in the decisive top of the 4th inning when they had 5
base hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Spike Owen who deflated the
crowd as he doubled bringing home two baserunners.  Pittsburgh was out-hit by
Montreal, 15 hits to 6.  
 
The victory went to Dennis Martinez(1-0) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing
2 runs. Doug Drabek(0-1) suffered the loss.  Montreal scored big getting 6
runs off him in 3 and 2/3 innings.  
 
 
PHILADELPHIA AT NEW YORK

Dale Murphy hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the New York Mets by the score of 7 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
 
Philadelphia scored the winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 3
hits.  Darren Daulton kicked off the action when he stroked a single.  Dave
Hollins next to the plate and he was hit by a pitch.  Murphy then doubled.  A
balk was called.  John Kruk came up to bat and ripped a one-base hit.  After
another out, Dickie Thon came to bat and grounded into a double play.
Philadelphia had 11 hits for the afternoon while New York had 8.  
 
Mitch Williams(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Jeff Innis(0-1)
was the losing pitcher in relief.  He allowed 3 runs and 3 hits in 1 inning.
