1991 Game/Player of Note

August 14, 1991

While it has been a disappointing season for a team, the New York Mets got a sterling performance
from a player tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. Shortstop Howard Johnson hit 3 homeruns and drove in 5 runs in the Mets 14-7 victory over the Cardinals. The homers gave him 27 on the year, 3rd most in the NL. Fans of the last place Mets haven't had much to cheer about this season and now take solace wherever they can. Johnson provided that tonight.

1st inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 3rd inning, tripled in the
4th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning. New York
had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The victory went to Cone(8-8) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 7 runs. The
loss was charged to Bryn Smith(11-5). He was knocked around by New York,
allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

'I had my good stuff tonight.' Cone said. 'As the game went along I started to
get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'

1991 Detroit Tigers News

August 13, 1991

After sweeping 4 games from the Yankees on the road in New York, the Detroit Tigers will square off against the AL West 1st place Chicago White Sox for 4 games back home at Tiger Stadium.
In the 1st game of a twilight double header the Tigers pitching floundered in the last 2 innings and Detroit fell to the White Sox 6-4. Reliever Mike Henneman failed to close out the game, blowing the save then losing the game after allowing 3 runs to score. The big hits for Chicago were Frank Thomas's 3 run homer in the 8th off Frank Tanana and Robin Ventura's 2 run triple in the 9th. Henneman, while being the best option in the Tiger's bullpen, is 7-5 with 23 Saves. But he has blown 12 saves and his ERA stands at 4.22.

the Chicago White Sox came back dramatically to top the Detroit Tigers by the
score of 6 to 4.

Chicago won the game with a rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on
3 hits. Craig Grebeck led off the inning for Chicago when he doubled. Mike
Henneman then had one get away for a wild pitch. Mike Huff then lined a
single which scored a run. Ron Karkovice got his chance to keep things
going, but he went down on strikes. One out later, Tim Raines came up and he
drew a walk. Ventura joined his teammates in the uprising and tripled with
two more runners crossing home. For the game Chicago out-hit Detroit 11 to
4.

Donn Pall(5-2) got the win allowing no runs in 3 and 2/3 innings. Pall got
help from Melido Perez who was credited with his 4th save. The loss was
charged to Henneman(7-5) in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up 2
hits and 1 walk.

After the game, it took a long while before Sparky Anderson emerged from his
office. In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He
concluded with, 'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood tonight, as
I think you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more
light-hearted over in the Chicago locker room.'

Detroit the victory as 51,812 happy fans celebrated wildly. Both teams
totaled 5 hits on the night.

Tanana(12-6) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. Steve Farr(2-4)
suffered the loss in relief. 'Now that is what I call fun! I just love
baseball, especially games like this, of course,' Sparky Anderson offered.
'Everyone at the stadium had a great time - did you see the fans go wild
there at the end?!'

1991 AL Standings

August 1, 1991

We've reached the month of August in the 1991 MLB Season. My Detroit Tigers are still playing solid, steady baseball and lead the AL East by 3 games over the 2nd place Toronto Blue Jays. The Tigers have been winning with offense, they are 2nd in the AL in Runs Scored. Their starting pitching has been good but the bullpen is a sore spot, with the exception of Mike Henneman. Toronto boasts the best pitching staff, so we shall see who prevails for the top spot in the AL East. In the AL West, the Chicago White Sox hold a slim lead over 3 other teams: the Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners and the Kansas City Royals. It remains to be seen if any of those 4 teams can pull away from the others.

1991 NL Standings

August 1, 1991

It's taken me awhile, but the month of July is finally in the books for the 1991 MLB season. In the NL East, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a firm hold on 1st place. The Buc's 20 game winning streak in July allowed them to have the best record (20-7) for the month. The NL West 1st place Atlanta Braves also had a fine month of July (18-8) and are even with Pittsburgh for best record in the NL at 64-35. The Los Angeles Dodgers kept pace with the Braves in July (18-8) and are still only 2.5 games behind.

1991 NL News Recap and League Leaders

August 1, 1991

The batting tandem of Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla have been a big reason the Pittsburgh Pirates are in 1st place in the NL East. Bonilla has the best BA in the NL while Barry Bonds leads in RBI and is 3rd in HR. Pitchers John Smiley (12 Wins) and Zane Smith (11 Wins) have also contributed nicely to the Buc's standing in the NL. In the NL West, Terry Pendleton and Ron Gant have led the charge to 1st place for the Atlanta Braves. The Dodgers have Mike Morgan (13 Wins) and Darryl Strawberry to thank for keeping LA close behind Atlanta. Greg Maddux of the Chicago Cubs and Andy Benes of the San Diego Padres are having very impressive seasons pitching for losing ball clubs.
