1991 Game/Player of Note

August 14, 1991

While it has been a disappointing season for a team, the New York Mets got a sterling performance
from a player tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals. Shortstop Howard Johnson hit 3 homeruns and drove in 5 runs in the Mets 14-7 victory over the Cardinals. The homers gave him 27 on the year, 3rd most in the NL. Fans of the last place Mets haven't had much to cheer about this season and now take solace wherever they can. Johnson provided that tonight.

TEAM RISP- Mets: 6 for 14 Cardinals: 4 for 15

Howard Johnson rocketed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI and David Cone dominated
striking out 10 St. Louis batters as the New York Mets defeated the St. Louis
Cardinals 14 to 7 at Busch Stadium.

Johnson had a great evening at the plate. He smacked a three-run homer in the
1st inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 3rd inning, tripled in the
4th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning. New York
had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The victory went to Cone(8-8) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 7 runs. The
loss was charged to Bryn Smith(11-5). He was knocked around by New York,
allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

'I had my good stuff tonight.' Cone said. 'As the game went along I started to
get the feeling that I was going to strike out a bunch of hitters.'
