1991 AL Player of Note: Chuck Finley

Finley and Johnson take 'Year of the No-Hitter' overseas ...May 7, 1991

California pitcher Chuck Finley struck out a league high 15 batters in the Angels 13-3 victory over the New York Yankee tonight. Finley went the distance while getting his 2nd win of the season. The 15 K's matched Nolan Ryan's performance earlier last month and is a MLB high for the season.

Chuck Finley racked up an impressive total of 15 strikeouts and right fielder
Dave Winfield collected 4 RBI with one swing of the bat at Anaheim Stadium as
the California Angels, running on all cylinders, ripped the slumping New York
Yankees by a large 13 to 3 margin.

Winfield enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He electrified the crowd with a
Grand Slam home run in the 3rd inning, hit a single in the 6th inning and
banged out a one-base hit in the 7th inning. California banged out 13 hits
on the night.

The victory was credited to Finley(2-2) who went the distance, allowing 3
runs. Andy Hawkins(1-2) was hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 5
hits and 3 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the performance of Finley - except New York. Stump
Merrill lamented, 'He just was 'on' tonight. He was keeping our guys off
balance all game. A fine game by a good strikeout pitcher - makes it a fun
game for the hometown fans - unfortunately we were the visitors!'

1991 AL Game of Note: NY @ Sea.

May 5, 1991

A baseball rarity occurred in today's game in Seattle where the Mariners defeated the New York Yankees 6-5. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. hit back to back homeruns for Seattle off  Yankee's starter Tim Leary. It is baseball's first father/son duo to hit back to back HR in the same game. For Jr., it was his 4th HR of the year. For Sr., it was his 1st.

One run was the difference at The Kingdome as the Seattle Mariners defeated
the New York Yankees 6 to 5.

Bill Krueger(2-0) did the job in relief, and he got credit for the win. He
went 2 and 1/3 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 walks seeing his ERA drop from
4.97 to 4.60. New York threatened in the 9th but Seattle was able to put
down the rally.

Krueger got help from Bill Swift who earned his 2nd save. The losing pitcher
was Tim Leary(0-4). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 4 walks in 5
and 2/3 innings.

Stump Merrill was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

1991 AL Standings

May 1, 1991

The opening month of the 1991 season is in the books. The Kansas City Royals have gotten off to the best start in MLB with their 15-4 record. The Royals have been unbeatable at home, going 11-0, and are currently on a 6 game winning streak. The AL West has 5 of its' 6 teams playing above .500. The East Division has only 1 team above .500, the Toronto Blue Jays. After a good start, my Detroit Tigers have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games but are only 1 game out of 1st place.

1991 AL Player of Note: Det. Tony Phillips

April 21, 1991

Former Detroit Tigers 2B Tony Phillips dead at 56Versatile utility man Tony Phillips of the Detroit Tigers has homered in each of the team's last 3 games. What makes it unusual is the fact that all 3 homeruns were lead off homers. Phillips was the DH against the Chicago White Sox on 4/18 when he hit his 1st HR of the year leading off the game. He played 2nd base the next day and led off with a HR in that game. The next day, Phillips was playing ss, giving Allen Trammell a rest, and hit his 3rd straight leadoff HR. After a bit of a slow start, Tony has started making good contact with the ball and is being rewarded with hits.

1991 AL Standings

April 18, 1991

10 days into the 1991 AL season finds my Detroit Tigers in 1st place in the AL East. Detroit just completed a 3 game sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays at home. All 3 games were won by 1 run. 2 of the games went extra innings. In the West Division, the Kansas City Royals (7-1) have gotten off to the best start in the AL. They've had the best pitching so far. The Seattle Mariners are putting up a lot of runs on the scoreboard, 64 in 9 games, which has resulted in a 7-2 record. The Oakland A's have lost their last 7 in a row.

1991 AL News Recap and League Leaders

April 18, 1991

10 days into my 1991 MLB season asplayed replay. My Detroit Tigers are off to a good start. One big reason, Rob Deer has hit 6 homeruns in the first 8 games. Also, take a look at the AL RBI leaders: all Seattle Mariners. Boston's Wade Boggs has hit safely in the team's first 9 games.
