1991 AL Standings

September 1, 1991

The last full month of the 1991 AL regular season is upon us. The Detroit Tigers lead the AL East and the Chicago White Sox are still on top of the AL West. The AL East 2nd place Toronto Blue Jays are 4.5 games behind Detroit. Toronto had a 9 game winning streak in August but they also had a 6 game losing streak. Chicago had the best record in August, 19-11, and that's allowed them a little breathing room over Seattle and Minnesota. The Kansas City Royals had a dreadful month going 9-18. They've pretty much eliminated themselves from the pennant race.

1991 NL Standings

September 1, 1991

The NL is heading into the last full month of the regular season. The Atlanta Braves in the West and the Pittsburgh Pirates in the East both have commanding leads in their divisions.  The Los Angeles Dodgers had a horrible month in August, going 9-20. Only the New York Mets had a worse month at 8-21. LA now trails Atlanta by 14 games. The St. Louis Cardinals had another good month and went 18-10. But they actually lost ground to Pittsburgh who were 21-8 in August.

1991 AL Detroit Tiger Game and News

August 25, 1991

The Detroit Tigers won a hard fought game in extra innings today against the Seattle Mariners. With the game tied 2-2, Cecil Fielder hit a dramatic walk off homerun with 2 out in the 10th inning. For Fielder, it was his MLB leading 45th homer of the season and league leading 112th RBI.
Detroit will now head out to the west coast for an 8 game road trip starting in California. They currently have a 6 game lead over the 2nd place Toronto Blue Jays. The Tigers received some bad news on Mike Henneman today. He'll be out about 3 weeks with an undisclosed injury. That'll put even more pressure on Detroit's already suspect bullpen.
