1991 AL Award Winners

October 29, 1991

 Chicago White Sox Frank Thomas (.329/38/121) won the 1991 AL MVP Award by narrowly edging out Detroit Tiger Cecil Fielder (.274/54/142), it was announced today. Toronto Blue Jay Tom Candiotti (25-6, 2.44, 187K) was named the 1991 AL Cy Young Award winner by a large margin over runner up Roger Clemens (20-9, 2.18, 259K) of the Boston Red Sox.

1991 NL Award Winners

    Pittsburgh Pirate Barry Bonds was named NL MVP for the just completed 1991 MLB season. Andy Benes of the San Diego Padres was named the NL Cy Young winner.
 Bonds (.293/38/120) edged out teammate Bobby Bonilla (.345/19/93) for the award. Benes (19-10, 2.47, 204K) won his award over runner up Mike Morgan (19-7, 2.48, 146K) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

1991 World Series Game 7

October 27, 1991

  The Chicago White Sox are the 1991 MLB World Series Champions!  Game 7 of the 1991 World Series was played tonight to a packed house in New Comiskey Park and the hometown team won a close ballgame 3-1. Jack McDowell got the start for Chicago and went 8 1/3 innings for the Win, his 2nd of the Series. McDowell was spectacular on the mound. He struck out 7, allowed only 4 hits, 2 walks and 1 unearned run. Scott Radinsky and Bobby Thigpen came on in the 9th to close out the game when Pittsburgh threatened.
  Chicago scored first in the bottom of the 1st after Pirate starter John Smiley walked Frank Thomas intentionally to face Carlton Fisk with 2 out and a runner on 2nd. But Fisk came through with a clutch RBI double, which could have scored 2 if not for the slow footed Thomas who was held at 3rd base. Pittsburgh tied the game up in the 4th inning on a clutch RBI single from Andy Van Slyke. Fisk came through again in the bottom of the 5th for Chicago with another clutch double that plated what proved to be the winning run. Robin Ventura drove in the final run of the game in the 7th inning for the White Sox and McDowell, with help from the pen, shut down the Pirates the rest of the way.

Carlton Fisk hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the Chicago White Sox defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 1 at New Comiskey Park.
 
Pittsburgh was unable to climb back into it after Chicago went ahead for good
in the 5th inning plating one baserunner using 3 hits.  Pittsburgh was
out-hit by Chicago, 11 hits to 4.  
 
Jack McDowell(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 8 and 1/3 innings.
Bobby Thigpen preserved the game for McDowell, recording his 3rd save.
John Smiley(0-1) was given the loss.

1991 Worlds Series Game 6

October 26, 1991

  There's going to be a Game 7 tomorrow night in Chicago! The White Sox scored 4 runs in the 1st inning then held on to win a nail-biter over the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Pittsburgh starter Doug Drabek was chased in the 1st inning after getting only 1 out and allowing 4 runs. The Pirates battled back though and had a chance in the 9th but pinch runner Cecil Espy was thrown out trying to steal by Carlton Fisk. Charlie Hough got the start for Chicago and went 5 1/3 innings, allowing only 1 run and got the Win. Bobby Thigpen got the save, his 2nd of the Series. The final game of the 1991 season, Game 7 of the World Series, will be played tomorrow night and a Champion will be crowned.

separated the combatants at game's end.  The Chicago White Sox plated 4 runs
in the 1st inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.
 
Charlie Hough(1-0) pitched a fine game.  He went 5 and 1/3 innings and
surrended up 3 hits and 4 walks reducing his ERA from 2.57 to 2.19.  Chicago
managed 7 hits in their victory.  
 
Bobby Thigpen recorded the save, his 2nd.  The losing pitcher was Doug
Drabek(1-1).  He gave up 4 runs and 4 hits in 1/3 of an inning.

1991 World Series Game 5

October 24, 1991

 The Chicago White Sox out hit the Pittsburgh Pirates by a large margin in Game 5 of the 1991 World Series, but the Pirates plated more runs and won the game 5-2. Chicago stranded 15 runners during the game and were only 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Catcher Mike Lavalliere was the hitting hero for Pittsburgh going 2 for 3 with 3 RBI. Zane Smith went 6 innings for the Win and the Pirate bullpen shut out the White Sox the rest of the way. Alex Fernandez took the Loss.
 The Series will shift to Chicago for Games 6 and 7 with Pittsburgh holding a 3-2 game lead.

In a good matchup it was the Pittsburgh Pirates 5, the Chicago White Sox 2 at
Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Chicago was unable to recover after Pittsburgh went ahead in the 4th inning
plating an isolated run.  After an out was recorded, Steve Buechele reached
on an error.  Mike Lavalliere was next and he slapped a single scoring the
run.  Although they lost, Chicago did out-hit Pittsburgh 12 to 4.  
 
Zane Smith(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 6 innings. Bob
Patterson recorded his 1st save.  The loss was charged to Alex
Fernandez(0-1).  He gave up 3 runs and 3 hits in 5 innings.

  The Pittsburgh Pirates evened the 1991 World Series at 2 games apiece by defeating the Chicago White Sox 4-1 tonight. The Pirates led 2-1 in the 7th inning when Gary Redus hit a 2-run homer off Wilson Alvarez to give Pittsburgh a little breathing room in another close ballgame. Randy Tomlin got the Win, allowing no runs in 5 1/3 innings. Jack McDowell was tagged with the loss although he allowed only 2 runs in his 6 innings of work.

The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago White Sox by a score of 4 to 1 at
Three Rivers Stadium.
 
Pittsburgh went ahead for good in the bottom of the 2nd inning plating one
baserunner.  Rosario Rodriguez was perfect in relief and got the save, his
1st.  
 
Randy Tomlin(1-0) went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Jack
McDowell(1-1) took the loss.  His ERA increased from 2.00 to 2.40 as he
allowed 2 runs in 6 innings.

1991 World Series Game 3

October 22, 1991

  In a dramatic finish to Game 3 of the 1991 World Series, the Chicago White Sox came from behind by scoring 2 runs in the 9th inning and then held on to win 3-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both starters, Hough for Chicago and Smiley for Pittsburgh, pitched well and deep into the game. Warren Newson was the hero for Chicago with a clutch pinch hit 2-run single in the top of the 9th. The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the 9th, but Bobby Thigpen was able to get the final 2 outs for the Save. Chicago now holds a 2-1 edge in the Series.

In a thriller the Chicago White Sox staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 2 at Three Rivers
Stadium.
 
Chicago scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2
hits.  Tim Raines led off and got things going when he drew a walk.  Joey
Cora stepped into the batter's box and he banged out a single.  Two outs
later Cora was safe on a stolen base.  Carlton Fisk came up and he was walked
intentionally to load the bases.  Warren Newson came up to bat and stroked a
single plating two runs.  Both teams ended up with 5 hits on the night.
 
The victory went to Scott Radinsky(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing
no runs. Bobby Thigpen recorded the save, his 1st.  Bill Landrum(0-1) was the
losing pitcher in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit without retiring a
batter.  
 
'Jeff Torborg was estatic following the game, 'You love stealing one on the
road like this.  We just kept plugging away until we pulled it out!'
