1991 AL Game Stories and Standings

September 29, 1991

 The Baltimore Orioles, in Detroit for a 4 game series against the Tigers, won their 2nd game in a row over the AL East leaders. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Minnesota Twins for the 2nd straight day and have closed the gap on Detroit to 1.5 games. While Minnesota was losing, the Chicago White Sox continued their impressive hot streak and pounded the Seattle Mariners 11-3. Chicago has now won 10 in a row and their magic number for winning the AL West is down to 2.

Tom Candiotti went the distance at The Skydome as the Toronto Blue Jays beat
the Minnesota Twins 7 to 1.
 
Toronto jumped on top of Minnesota in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 2
runs using 2 hits.  After an out was recorded, Candy Maldonado began the
rally when he laced a one-base hit.  After another out, Pat Borders stepped
up to the plate and he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.
That was all Candiotti(24-6) needed.  Toronto rapped out 9 hits for the
afternoon.  
 
Jack Morris(17-9) was given the loss.  He surrended 3 homeruns in his 7 and
1/3 innings.

Frank Thomas jacked one out of the ballyard and had 3 RBI as the red-hot
Chicago White Sox defeated the Seattle Mariners by the score of 11 to 3 at
New Comiskey Park.
 
The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance
provided by Thomas.  He doubled which brought home a run in the 1st inning,
smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning and hit a single in the 8th inning.
Chicago totaled 11 hits on the night.  
 
Greg Hibbard(13-5) was the winner allowing 1 run in 5 and 2/3 innings. Melido
Perez got the save, his 5th.  Rich Delucia(11-10) was the loser.  He pitched
6 innings allowing 4 hits and 5 walks.

In a good matchup it was the Baltimore Orioles 5, the Detroit Tigers 2 at
Tiger Stadium.
 
In the top of the 6th inning Baltimore scored 4 runs when they had 4 base
hits.  The highlight belonged to Sam Horn who quieted the home crowd when he
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run.  Baltimore finished with
11 hits while Detroit ended up with 6.  
 
The victory was credited to Mike Mussina(4-2) who went 8 innings, allowing 2
runs. Gregg Olson gained credit for his 27th save.  Bill Gullickson(17-15)
took the loss.  He surrendered 3 homeruns in his 6 and 1/3 innings.
