In a dramatic finish to Game 3 of the 1991 World Series, the Chicago White Sox came from behind by scoring 2 runs in the 9th inning and then held on to win 3-2 over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Both starters, Hough for Chicago and Smiley for Pittsburgh, pitched well and deep into the game. Warren Newson was the hero for Chicago with a clutch pinch hit 2-run single in the top of the 9th. The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the 9th, but Bobby Thigpen was able to get the final 2 outs for the Save. Chicago now holds a 2-1 edge in the Series.

In a thriller the Chicago White Sox staged a dramatic comeback then held on to
win over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 3 to 2 at Three Rivers
Stadium.
Chicago scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 2 runs using 2
hits. Tim Raines led off and got things going when he drew a walk. Joey
Cora stepped into the batter's box and he banged out a single. Two outs
later Cora was safe on a stolen base. Carlton Fisk came up and he was walked
intentionally to load the bases. Warren Newson came up to bat and stroked a
single plating two runs. Both teams ended up with 5 hits on the night.
The victory went to Scott Radinsky(1-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing
no runs. Bobby Thigpen recorded the save, his 1st. Bill Landrum(0-1) was the
losing pitcher in relief. He surrendered 1 run and 1 hit without retiring a
batter.
