October 19, 1991Game 1 of the 1991 World Series between the top 2 teams in each league got underway in Chicago tonight. In a tense battle that saw good scoring chances for both teams the White Sox defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2. Chicago's Robin Ventura (pictured) hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th that proved to be the margin for victory.
The Pirates had White Sox starter Jack McDowell on the ropes in the 3rd and 6th innings. In both situations Pittsburgh had loaded the bases with no outs. In both instances manager Jeff Torborg stayed with his ace and McDowell rewarded his decisions by getting out of the jams, allowing only 1 run each time. McDowell went the distance for the Win but there was one more scare before the game was over. With 2 out in the 9th, Pirate pinch hitter Orlando Merced sent a flyball to the wall in leftfield that Tim Raines made a leaping catch on (I rolled a 1-6: HR 1-8, flyballb 9-20. Rolled a 15 for the final out). Zane Smith started for Pittsburgh and got the Loss. Tomorrow's Game 2 will see Chicago's Greg Hibbard (14-5/3.39) taking on the Pirates and starter Doug Drabeck (16-5/3.27).
