1991 AL Championship Series Game 1

Jack McDowell says “everyone knows” there are Hall of Famers who ...October 8, 1991

The AL Championship Series got underway tonight at Comiskey Park in Chicago featuring a matchup between the White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Detroit had a 'play-in game' yesterday against Toronto that Bill Gullickson started. Frank Tanana started the day before that and Walt Terrell pitched in relief the day before Tanana. So the Tigers were forced to begin this Series with their #4 starter Mark Leiter. Leiter did well before leaving the game with the bases loaded in the 5th inning. Detroit got out of that inning allowing only 1 run.
But the story of this game was the pitching of Chicago starter Jack McDowell. McDowell went the distance, allowing 1 run and striking out 12 as the White Sox defeated the Tigers 3-1. The big hit for Chicago came from Sammy Sosa who hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 8th.
