Albert Belle ripped 3 homeruns and had 8 RBI while Doug Jones went the distance
as the Cleveland Indians destroyed the Detroit Tigers by a score of 17 to 3 at
Municipal Stadium.

Belle was really 'in the zone'. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the
3rd inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun in the 3rd inning and lofted a
three-run bomb in the 4th inning. Cleveland lit up the scoreboard in the 3rd
inning which saw them plate 9 runs on 7 hits and the 4th inning tallying 5
runs. Cleveland totaled 17 hits on the night.

Jones(1-7) lasted until the end allowing 3 runs for the win. Walt Terrell(9-8)
was the loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 2
innings.

'I didn't feel that good when I came to the park tonight,' Belle said. 'I'm
glad I decided to play!'

1991 AL Standings and League Leaders

September 14, 1991

After the first 2 weeks of September things have tightened up in both Divisions of the AL. The Detroit Tigers hold a slim 2.5 game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East. In the AL West, the Minnesota Twins have pulled within 2.5 games of the 1st place Chicago White Sox. There's also a close race for the batting title happening between Baltimore's Cal Ripken and Texas' Julio Franco.

Cecil Fielder hit his 50th homerun of the season tonight but the Boston Red Sox won the ballgame 7-3. Fielder hit the homerun, a 2-run shot, in the 1st inning but that was about all the offense the Tigers could muster. The Red Sox's offense was led by Phil Plantier who hit 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI. Matt Young pitched well after the 1st inning and got the Win for Boston.  With the loss, the Toronto Blue Jays pulled within 4 games of 1st place Detroit.

Phil Plantier blasted 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Matt Young retired 10
batters on strikeouts as the Boston Red Sox bested the Detroit Tigers 7 to 3
at Tiger Stadium.

Plantier provided the offensive punch. He laced a base-hit in the 1st inning,
cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and clubbed a two-run home run in
the 7th inning. Boston managed 8 hits in their victory.

The victory went to Young(7-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs.
Walt Terrell(9-7) was the loser. He gave up 7 hits and 4 walks in 6 innings.

Young didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he had
10 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a decent
total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty good,
isn't it?'
